The Daily Telegraph

Clover Stroud

Excellent... What makes this book stand out is that Majumdar is often genuinely funny and can spin a good story. He uses food to gain insights into a dizzying array of countries, combining travel writing, history, and a touch of memoir with a love for food, even in its most extreme and colourful forms. Highly readable, and often highly entertaining, but to be avoided if you are on a diet.

The Daily Telegraph

Helen Brown

The reader might wish for more detailed descriptions of meals that Majumdar too regularly describes as “memorable” or “indescribable”. He is clearly articulate enough to try harder at some points. But then, the man admits to being one of life’s moochers and it’s refreshing to share with him his lack of enthusiasm for the rigours of tourism... Although this is an account of Majumdar’s international love affair with food, it’s his deep affection for those with whom he shares it that really nourishes the soul.
