Further than the Furthest Thing
Set on a remote island in the middle of the Atlantic, based loosely on the real island of Tristan da Cunha, Further Th an the Furthest Thing tells the story of a small community isolated from the world beyond the ocean. Island life appears simple and pure but when a new visitor arrives, past secrets threaten to erupt and destroy the calm. When an apparently dormant volcano becomes active, the inhabitants are forced to flee their homes in search of a new life.

“Harris does not romanticise a way of life that is harsh and unforgiving but, in the abrupt shift of location between her two acts, she captures a yearning sense of what we have sacrificed in the name of progress. In a story based on the experiences of her own family, she gives voice to that which is lost when two countrymen can no longer talk to each other without first making an appointment.”

“Twelve years on from its premiere, Further Than The Furthest Thing still strikes me as a play that has never quite had the dramaturgical attention it deserves; its dramatic impact would be even greater if it used fewer words, and trusted more in its own action.”
